My fascination with words—not a recent affliction, but one sustained, if half-heartedly, from childhood— usually serves only to disorient me when meeting new people or learning new things; while listening intently I am likely to “tune in” only to the sound of interesting or foreign words, accents, or turns-of-phrases instead of comprehending the subject at hand (As in, “Oops… What was your name again?”).   However, there are times when random-retention comes in handy… such as those times when you want to list valuable and pleasing new words for the entertainment of gentle readers. 

Music is rarely heard in most traditional office settings. Of course there are many reasons for this, the most obvious being that musical tastes are subjective. Not everyone enjoys Vivaldi and some people cringe at the first notes of “Satisfaction”. Controlling the dial might become a real issue in a close office environment. One of the joys of working from home is the freedom of choice that working mostly alone allows.  Your sticky notes can be stuck to anything you want. If you are an Eskimo into heavy metal, you can keep the thermostat at 65 and the radio at 10. So home-workers can pump up the volume and keep the tunes rolling.

Sometimes, in those brief, rare moments in between working very hard at my job and visiting needy children with gift baskets full of toys, I pause for a moment to reflect on how our ancestors struggled their entire adult lives without the many conveniences afforded us by modern technology.
