It’s Friday. It’s already been a long week and I’ll spare you the details. -- You’re welcome. – I hate programming. I can do it…poorly… and prefer to do it not at all. That said, today’s task was to update my client’s CoolTeenChat home page, replacing one banner ad with another. This should be simple, right? I didn’t create the CoolTeenChat website; but, I have updated it before, to help the client experiment with different ads to measure their effectiveness. Today’s victim—er—ad was at the bottom of the page. All I had to do was replace an affiliate program banner with a Google AdSense banner. Actually, that was almost easy. I created the new banner ad then replaced the old link with the new one. I should have stopped there. Instead, I decided we should display image ads instead of text ads, because they’d look nicer on the page and might be more effective. Ok, so I created a second new ad that specified image-only, then replaced the new link with the newer link. Aaaargh! Why was everything from the skinny column, formerly on the right, now displaying below the image ad I just created? I hadn’t changed anything except the ad I was working with. I hate when stuff like this happens!! After several back-and-forths, swapping the text ad and image ad, I concluded that the magic of web ads would remain a mystery to me. I kept the text ad, which didn’t make me happy, and gave up for the moment. Maybe later, after a shot or two of vodka, I’ll figure it out. Or, maybe some guru reading this will take pity on me and explain it. Obviously I wouldn’t have written this blog if the stupid code mystery wasn’t still bugging me. And, somehow, I will get an answer. But geez, this isn’t how I wanted to end my work week. Now my brain will be churning all weekend. I know I’ll be puttering on my computer at odd hours throughout the weekend, instead of relaxing and enjoying myself. Grrrr. I hate Fridays like this!
