Did you know that September is “Telecommuting Mom’s Month”? Well, apparently it is. From the folks who brought you InYourPJs.com, Workaholics4Hire.com, TelecommutingAnswerLady.com, YouCanWorkFromAnywhere.com, and TelecommutingMoms.com, comes (pause here for a breath) TelecommutingMomsMonth.com. The event creator and coordinator is Nell Taliercio (the “Telecommuting Answer Lady” and owner of TelecommutingMoms.com). Another website and gimmick from the well-meaning but at this point over-extended “work-from-home-now!” crowd, Telecommuting Mom’s Month is a virtual event which began September 4th and continues through September 29th. Each week the website – which bills the month as a “Celebration and Learning Event for Moms Who Want to Telecommute” – offers audio links with advice and tips on everything from approaching a current employer about telecommuting to telecommuting tax tips (TelecommutingTaxes.com coming soon). There’s also a contest, and the prizes include a professionally written resume and an hour of career coaching, among other related goodies. The target audience is of course moms who want to work from home in order to spend more time with their kids. It’s a great idea and worth a look, if only because it brings together a number of telecommuting-industry businesses for a common cause, and the idea is really quite engaging. The information provided in the audio clips could be of interest for a wider audience than just moms. I just wish the self-promotion aspect wasn’t quite so shameless, to almost overshadow the potential educational benefits of the event. By the way, September is recognized as “Try Telecommuting Month” for everyone, at least in North Texas (Gordon Dickson, Star-Telegram, September 2006).
