I am having a hard time tonight.  I just finished playing with one of my sites, an HTML::MasonX site that I keep to track some stocks I dabble in.  I chose HTML::MasonX for this site as an exercise to keep my perl package skills current.  MasonX runs under mod_perl 2.0 on Apache 2 so it's pretty cutting edge (I think).  I will admit that I do not see a lot of call for this skill set so it is either very cutting edge or just not useful in the commercial world.  I really don't know which anymore.

This brings me to the point of tonights rant.  Lately, as I look at the Job market in Massachusetts, I am seeing demand center around PHP open source CMS sites that can be rapidly deployed.  That's cool, I guess.  I am currently studing Drupal, Geeklog, Mambo and Joomla in hope that I can be of use to someone in this area.  Dow the street from me a house is going up.  The foundation was poured in a few days and then the actual house was mounted on the foundation in two sections that were prebuilt in a factory somewhere.  Apparently all the wiring was in the walls already and in a week the contractors went from an empty lot to a pre-fab house.   I mention this because it feels as if this is how the business world is now looking at software engineering.  It's frustrating for someone who used to meet with the business people, modle their business processes in Visio or something, translate that into a DB model, deploy that model and then write the code to make that application.  now we download Joomla and hope the moduals that come with it are "close enough".  It's disconcerting at best to shift into a world where noone wants a custom house anymore.

okay, end of rant, pass the gravey.
