How to Work for a Boss You Hate by Telecommuting PDF Print E-mail

During my telecommuting career, my many bosses have had very different personalities. I got along famously with some, and loathed others.

Before I go further, let me clarify that I’m not talking about a boss you can’t trust; that’s a whole different animal and I’ll discuss that in another blog entry. I’m talking here about the boss who makes you clinch your teeth just thinking about.

As a telecommuter, you’ve got a huge advantage in these situations. You don’t have to see, or maybe even talk to that boss on a daily basis.

You can, and should, focus your attention on your work and its deadlines. Whenever possible, avoid even thinking about that annoying person. When you must have a phone or face-to-face meeting, remind yourself that you only need to suffer for a limited period of time; then, you can return to your work.

Post your hourly rate, or the contract amount on your computer screen. Whenever you question why you’re putting yourself through all this aggravation, refer to that number for your answer. I know, the experts say we’re supposed to work at something we love; but, there are times when we work just to pay the bills.

Go ahead, blow off steam. After a phone call or meeting with that boss you hate, it’s ok to release your frustration—just don’t do it when the boss can see or hear you. Take your dog for a walk, or do some exercises. It’s even ok to pace the floor of your office, while pumping your fist into the air and shouting all the things you wish you could say to your boss—but common sense says you shouldn’t.

Note of caution: Your goal is to release tension so you can get back to work. You defeat the purpose if whatever you do cranks you up more.

You don’t have to love your boss, or even like your boss to work effectively. Use your telecommuting advantage to your benefit, so you can keep your sanity and your job.
